PTSD & Trauma Therapy

Traumatic experiences can change the way you see yourself, other people, and the world around you. You may find yourself feeling constantly on guard, avoiding reminders of what happened, struggling with sleep, or feeling disconnected from others.

The good news is that recovery is possible.

At Trident Psychological Services, I provide evidence-based treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related difficulties using approaches that have been supported by decades of scientific research.

You do not have to remain stuck in survival mode.

Trauma & PTSD

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is a psychological response to experiences that overwhelm a person's ability to cope.

Examples may include:

  • Military combat

  • Sexual assault

  • Physical assault

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Serious accidents

  • Medical trauma

  • First responder experiences

  • Sudden loss of a loved one

  • Exposure to violence

  • Witnessing traumatic events

Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, but many people continue to experience distress long after the event has ended.

Common Symptoms of PTSD

People with PTSD often experience symptoms in four broad areas:

Re-experiencing

  • Intrusive memories

  • Flashbacks

  • Nightmares

  • Emotional distress when reminded of the event

Avoidance

  • Avoiding places, people, or situations

  • Avoiding thoughts or memories

  • Emotional numbing

Changes in Mood and Thinking

  • Persistent guilt or shame

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Negative beliefs about oneself

  • Loss of interest in activities

Hyperarousal

  • Irritability

  • Anger

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Being easily startled

  • Constant vigilance

Many people also struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or substance use as they attempt to manage these symptoms.

Evidence-Based Treatment

My approach is grounded in treatments that have been extensively studied and recommended by leading professional organizations.

Depending on your needs, treatment may incorporate:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Identifying and changing patterns of thinking and behavior that maintain distress.

Exposure-Based Approaches

Gradually confronting trauma-related memories and situations in a structured and effective manner.

Acceptance and Mindfulness-Based Strategies

Learning to respond differently to difficult thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations.

Written Exposure Therapy (WET)

A brief, evidence-based treatment for PTSD that has demonstrated strong outcomes while requiring fewer sessions than many traditional approaches.

Treatment recommendations are individualized based on your goals, symptoms, and circumstances.

Specifics

What to Expect

The first few sessions focus on understanding:

  • Your current concerns

  • Relevant life experiences

  • Symptoms and functioning

  • Treatment goals

Together, we develop a plan that is tailored to your specific needs.

Throughout therapy, progress is monitored so that treatment remains focused, effective, and aligned with your goals.

Military and Veteran Trauma

I have extensive experience working with military personnel and veterans experiencing combat-related trauma, moral injury, adjustment difficulties, and PTSD.

My training includes advanced work through the National Center for PTSD within the VA Boston Healthcare System.

I understand that military experiences often involve challenges that differ from civilian trauma, and treatment is tailored accordingly.

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy?

No. Many people experience significant trauma-related distress without meeting full criteria for PTSD.

Will I have to talk about everything right away?

No. Treatment proceeds at a pace that is clinically appropriate and collaboratively determined.

How long does treatment take?

The length of treatment varies depending on your goals and the nature of your concerns. Some evidence-based trauma treatments are relatively brief, while others may require additional time.
